Lips are everywhere.

I can’t keep mine sealed. This is what Moore Beauty’s Julia Hoy shared with me about lip injections.

All About Lip Injections

Lip augmentation is one of the most requested treatments for patients of all ages. Celebrities such as Kylie Jenner have elevated awareness of lip augmentation and lip fillers. Many patients bring in photos for consultation to communicate what they are attempting to achieve. However, the patient’s own anatomy, lip structure, and age are considerations. The products we use are hyaluronic acid fillers for lip plumping. Almost 100% of the clients we work with feel that they have deficient volume in the upper lip. Many relate that when they smile, the entire upper lip disappears.

My approach is patient-centered arriving at a treatment plan together. We consider augmentation of the cupid’s bow, the lip’s natural pillows, the philtral columns, and improvement of the patient’s profile. Before and after photos provide patients with a great deal of satisfaction. I apply a numbing cream to the area for about ten minutes prior to injection. The BLT numbing product works quickly and efficiently for pain control. The dermal fillers contain lidocaine providing additional comfort.

Common Side Effects After Lip Injections

The most common side effect post injection is lip swelling which can be significant in some patients. Bruising is also a potential side effect and varies among patients depending on medications. I advise clients to stop ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil, and vitamin E several days prior to treatment to reduce the chance of bruising and oozing. Ice is the patient’s friend post-treatment.

Typically what I observe post injection with first-time patients is the swelling concern which generally lasts three days. Patients become accustomed to the swelling in 24 hours and appreciate the look. After the swelling subsides, most relate that they wish the swelling would have remained. I estimate 10-20% of the immediate effect is swelling. I encourage patients to return for additional product in one to four months to achieve nine to twelve months longevity and/or achieve the augmentation goals.

Post care includes ice and mild lip massage which I demonstrate with the patient while ensuring they’re happy with the results.

Lips really are everything.
