Life was great for those first few days until your freshly painted red manicure got its first chip. There is, perhaps, no greater beauty sin than wearing chipped red nail polish. Now you have to take the paint off and start again, this time with a neutral hue. Not true. Here are 5 tips that can extend the life of your manicure. (Because someone has to do the dishes.)

Apply a Basecoat

A basecoat is the first step in prolonging the life of your nail polish. Don’t skip this step.

Apply 3 Coats

It’s best to apply 3 thin coats of nail polish rather than 2 thick ones. Polish needs to dry in between coats otherwise they could get bubbles under the surface and chip without abandon.

Polish Under the Tips

Always polish under the tip of your nails to prevent chips from constant use.

Opt for Light and Shimmery Polishes

If your nails are prone to chipping you should avoid dark, bold colors and instead opt for light and shimmery neutrals. Think opal, metallics, and nudes.

Book a Gel Manicure

A gel manicure is by far the ideal solution for any girl who wants nail polish that wears for weeks on end. The most frustrating part about gel polish is the opposite..taking it off.

Top Coat

Apply a top coat every two days to keep your mani shiny and strong.
